Pack Trips
In 1930, Charlie Moore bought the Simpson Lake Cabins from three ingenious men who built a fishing camp next to the Simpson Lake shores. For over 60 years, CM guests could ride to Simpson and spend a few nights during their ranch stay. When the area became part of the Fitzpatrick Wilderness, the CM could no longer use the cabins and established a fine base camp near Union Lake, where today guests still experience spectacular fishing, riding and sightseeing.
The CM Ranch offers pack trips in conjunction with, or separately from traditional week-long dude ranch vacations. Guests can go to our base camp at Union Lake, where Simpson and other glacier-fed lakes are just a day’s ride away, or take a progressive trip where they can camp right next to Simpson Lake, or camp next to a different lake each night.
The unique location of the CM treats viewers to geologic exposures in the glacial valley which result in an extraordinary display. From the ranch, the horseback ride to our Union Lake base camp takes about 5 or 6 hours, and traverses through creek bottoms, forests and meadows. Along the way, one often sees deer, elk, moose, antelope, snowshoe hares and picas (a small mountain rodent that spends its summer storing hay for the winter).
Progressive trips go even further into the interior of the Fitzpatrick Wilderness, where the stunning terrain and cold mountain lakes have seen very little human impact. For many years, guests of all ages have experienced the tremendous beauty and solitude of the Wind River Mountains on pack trips led by our experienced guide and cook, who devote themselves to showing people the very finest and detailed areas of Wyoming.
We require a minimum of 2 nights and at least 2 people for pack trips.
